Market Update: California Crops

May, 2026

Recent extreme weather out of the Salinas Valley from a mild winter to record March heat and heavy rains is putting pressure on several key items. Increased pest activity and disease are impacting quality and limiting yields, especially on lettuce, tightening supply and pushing markets higher across the industry.

Major Market Impacts

Leaf Items (Iceberg, Romaine, Hearts, Processed Salads)
Quality and yields are inconsistent, with iceberg most impacted. Supplies are tight and pricing is elevated. As demand shifts, romaine and hearts are seeing upward pressure as well. Processed items are being prorated due to limited raw product.

Broccoli & Cauliflower
Slow growth is delaying harvests. Supplies are short, with prorates on florets and elevated markets expected to continue.

Baby Kale
Extremely tight supply due to low yields and quality concerns. Shortages and prorates expected over the next few weeks.

Carrots
Harvest delays are tightening availability, especially on baby peeled and snack pack items. Markets are firm with potential short-term gaps.

Oranges
The Navel season is wrapping up before Valencias are fully ready. Larger sizes are limited, with substitutions likely.
