Market Update: Seasonal Challenges
October, 2025
As we move deeper into fall, we’re seeing some seasonal and weather-related challenges across several key growing regions. Our team has been working around the clock to source the best possible product, but Mother Nature is making things a bit more complicated than usual.
Despite the hurdles, we’re staying proactive; pivoting suppliers, inspecting closely, and communicating daily with our growers. Here’s a quick overview of what’s happening in the field:
Major Market Impacts
Strawberries
Heavy rain and flooding in Oxnard, Santa Maria, and Watsonville have stalled harvesting for several days, creating light supply and quality challenges. Excess moisture has caused softer fruit, bruising, and shorter shelf life as fields dry out and recover. Growers are working to reopen production gradually, but volume will remain limited and quality variable until conditions stabilize.
Romaine, Leaf + Iceberg Lettuces
Hail and rain at Spreckels Ranch damaged red leaf and butter lettuce, bringing those items to an early close for the week. Green leaf and romaine are being reassessed daily. Iceberg from Salinas is nearing the end of its season, showing lighter weights and pink ribs due to high humidity, while romaine hearts are growing too fast in warm, humid conditions—causing twisted ribs and lower yields.
Broccoli, Broccolini & Rabe
Broccoli and broccolini crops have been hit with regional failures, while broccoli rabe supplies remain limited. Regional weather issues continue to impact yield and sizing. Expect lighter supply and some inconsistencies until new fields begin to harvest.
Cauliflower
Markets remain volatile as growers navigate cooler weather and smaller yields.
Brussels Sprouts
Early frost and late-season pressure have shortened the harvest window and tightened supply. Pricing remains elevated heading into the holidays.
Seasonal Highlights
Even with these challenges, there’s still plenty to celebrate this season:
Connecticut Cranberries
Fresh from Killingworth Cranberries, bringing a true local touch to fall and holiday menus.
Local Apples & Tomatoes
Still showing excellent quality and flavor.
Pumpkins
Last call for carving, décor, and baking before frost brings the season to an end.
We know that fluctuations like these can be challenging. Our team is staying in constant contact with growers and shippers to secure the best possible quality for you every day. Even in a tough stretch, we’re focused on keeping your kitchens stocked and your menus strong.
